Thursday, January 12, 2023, the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) Universitas Indonesia (UI) through the Center for Biostatistics and Health Informatics Studies (PKBIK) Cluster held an online seminar entitled, “Utilization of BPJS Sample Data for Public Health Research”. This seminar was held online through the FPH UI Zoom Meetings and Youtube platform and was attended by no less than 500 people.
Since 2004, the Social Security Administration Agency (BPJS) has been the organizer of the National Health Insurance. This makes BPJS have big data regarding public health which is very good when used for research. “This activity is very good for understanding the use of BPJS secondary data. This big data can be used to improve health policies and programs for the Indonesian people,” said the Dean of FPH UI, Prof. Mondastri Korib Sudaryo, M.S., D.Sc., in his speech.
The seminar moderated by FPH UI Quality Assurance Manager, Dr. Besral, S.K.M., M.Sc., this was filled in by a Biostatistics Lecturer at FPH UI who is also a Statistics Consultant for Making BPJS Sample Data, dr. Iwan Ariawan, MSPH. In his presentation, dr. Iwan explained the use of BPJS sample data comprehensively starting from the background to what data is available. The participants also received 2 (two) documents containing a sample data book and a guide for analyzing the 2015-2021 BPJS sample data.
Until the end of 2021, the number of JKN participants reaches 90% of the Indonesian population registered at 27,675 health facilities. This data represents all participants and health services used in 2015-2021. With its availability and ease of access, this data can be used by lecturers, students and researchers with simple and free administrative procedures. The existing data is then processed in the form of a representative sample for the national, provincial and district levels. Several adjustments were made so that the number of samples was sufficient, such as over-sampling in the population of health service users. “There are 2,305,435 samples and an additional 104,475 participants in 2021. This data is related to the services they will access in 2021,” said dr. Ivan.
BPJS data is very powerful and useful data to be used as secondary data. The existence of this seminar is a form of socialization for the community, especially researchers, so they can take advantage of the available data from BPJS. Going forward, FPH UI will continue to organize and support programs that can increase public knowledge in the field of public health, such as this seminar. (BK)
