Saturday, September 30, 2023, students from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia (FPH UI) held an online National OSH Seminar with the theme “Application of Occupational Safety and Health in Supporting Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Achievements in various business sectors”. This National OSH Seminar is the closing of a series of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Expo activities. Previously, OHS Expo 14 had successfully held OHS Competition and OHS Training.
Seminar I and Professor of OSH FPH UI, as the first keynote speaker. Prof. Fatma spoke about “The Role and Relationship of ESG with Occupational Safety and Health”. ESG uses environmental and governance factors to evaluate companies and countries regarding how far they have progressed with sustainability. “In practice, ESG supports the achievement of 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) indicators. There are three pillars of ESG, namely environmental, social and governance. “Occupational Safety and Health has an important role in the social pillar, especially in safety and health criteria,” said Prof. Fatma.
The second keynote speaker, Drs. Muhammad Idham, M.K.K.K., Director of OSH Testing Development at the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower, explained about “Implementation of OSH in Supporting ESG Success in Indonesia”. In 2023, 146.62 million Indonesians will be included in the workforce. The large workforce makes OSH very important for every company to implement. OSH is implemented for human rights reasons as well as economic reasons to prevent greater losses. By implementing OSH principles, it is hoped that a company environment that is safe, healthy, free of pollution, and zero work-related accidents and diseases will be created, which will ultimately increase company productivity in a sustainable manner. “There are OSH management principles that integrate OSH principles into company operations, including ESG principles. “ESG is here to support companies to maintain a healthy business balance in the long term,” explained Drs. Idham.
Furthermore, the National OSH Seminar also presented three speakers from three different sectors, namely Sr. Officer II Safety and Environment Head Office PT Pertamina (Persero), Usep Sutisna, S.K.M.; Head of Mining Engineering PT Vale Indonesia, Budiawansyah, S.T., M.K.K.K.; as well as PT Astra Honda Motor Safety Senior Assessor, Bayu Erlangga Pramunditta, S.T. The three speakers explained about “Implementation of OSH in Supporting ESG in the Oil and Gas, Mining and Manufacturing Sectors”.
Basically, ESG uses a risk-based approach so that its implementation can differ in each sector. In the oil and gas sector, PT Pertamina (Persero) has committed to rehabilitating land close to Pertamina sites to improve the ecosystem and implement the highest safety and health standards to protect workers, consumers, and the community. PT Vale as a mining sector measures success based on people, planet, and profit. PT Vale implements sustainable mining practices by paying attention to aspects before, during and after mining. This includes processes ranging from land clearing, stripping, ore mining, to converters and packaging. Meanwhile, PT Astra Honda Motor as a manufacturing sector supports ESG by implementing an OSH Management System based on Government Regulation Number 50 of 2012, ISO 45001:2018, and Astra Green Company provisions. There are also 10 PT Astra Honda Motor Golden Rules that must be obeyed, which include rules regarding the implementation of OSH.
The implementation of OSH in supporting ESG in each sector must be strengthened by the leadership’s commitment to implementing these principles. It is also necessary to internalize OSH and ESG principles for each worker so that companies can implement sustainable work practices. (WR)
