Environmental Health Festival: Presentation of Field Learning Experience Results by Undergraduate Environmental Health Students

Learning in higher education is not confined to the classroom. The Department of Environmental Health, Faculty of Public Health (FPH), Universitas Indonesia (UI), demonstrated this through the Environmental Health Festival, which marked the culmination of the Institution-Based Field Learning Experience (Pengalaman Belajar Lapangan/PBL) program carried out by students in collaboration with dozens of partner institutions supporting the learning process.

The Environmental Health Festival served as a platform to showcase students’ PBL outcomes and to strengthen collaboration between the academic institution and 22 partner organizations involved, namely the DKI Jakarta Provincial Health Office, East Jakarta City Health Office, Grand Hyatt Jakarta, Depok City Health Office, Bogor City Health Office, DKI Jakarta Provincial Environmental Agency, PT Sucofindo, PDAM Tirta Asasta Perseroda, Soekarno-Hatta Port Health Office, Universitas Indonesia Hospital, PT XLSMART, Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta, the East Java Provincial Manpower and Transmigration Office, Jakarta Public Health Laboratory Center, St. Regis Jakarta, UI Research and Development Laboratory, PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia, Tangerang City Health Office, PT Central Proteina Prima, and PT Essence Indonesia. Held on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Doctoral Promotion Room, Building G, FPH UI, the event also provided valuable feedback for future curriculum development.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Laila Fitria, S.K.M., M.Kes., Education Manager of FPH UI, enthusiastically emphasized the significant outcomes of students’ internship experiences as a bridge connecting classroom learning with real-world conditions. She also expressed her appreciation to all students and partner institutions.

“This event brings together students’ ideas, work, and experiences after completing internships at various institutions. Internships are an essential part of the student learning process, as they allow students to observe and face real conditions in the field, ranging from sanitation and environmental management issues, public health, air quality, water quality, to environmental health education. Through presentations and exhibitions, this festival not only showcases achievements, but also shares learning experiences, innovations, and educational insights,” said Dr. Laila in her remarks.

In line with this, Dr. Zakianis, S.K.M., M.K.M., Head of the Department of Environmental Health, FPH UI, conveyed his appreciation and motivation to the students and partners involved. “Congratulations to the students. The experience you have gained is not merely material for a final report, but an important provision for your professional journey. Use this field experience as a process of deep reflection and a strong impetus for your future professional path—it is an invaluable investment that complements your academic foundation,” Dr. Zakianis remarked.

The PBL program is a mandatory activity for FPH UI students, serving as a means to apply academic knowledge directly within the community. The program aims to equip students with understanding and practical skills to address health-related issues, while also building strong collaboration with relevant local government agencies.
