FPH UI Lecturer Receives WCU 2026 Community Development Grant, Promoting the Strengthening of Food SMEs through International Collaboration

Depok, April 1, 2026 – Another proud achievement has been attained by the academic community of the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) Universitas Indonesia (UI). Abdul Kadir, M.Sc., a lecturer from the Department of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) at FPH UI, together with seven other lecturers from Universitas Indonesia, successfully secured the 2026 WCU Community Development Grant under the theme “Enhancing Quality Education for International Impacts and Recognition.”

The grant, announced by the UI Directorate of Community Engagement and Social Innovation on March 26, 2026, is part of Universitas Indonesia’s commitment to promoting innovative, impactful, and globally competitive community engagement initiatives. The program also serves as a platform to expand international collaboration in developing tangible solutions for society.

In this program, Abdul Kadir collaborates with Desamind, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, students from the University of Queensland, The University of Auckland, The University of New South Wales, and a researcher from Earth Sciences New Zealand, Dr. Jonatan A. Lassa. The community engagement project is titled “INTEGRA: Integrated Improvement of Digital Marketing Strategy, Food Safety Awareness, and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) System to Strengthen Market Competitiveness and Business Sustainability at Mill Bakery, Auckland, New Zealand,” conducted in partnership with Mill Bakery.

The program was developed in response to the challenges faced by small businesses in the food sector amid increasing business competition and increasingly complex regulatory demands. Preliminary assessments identified three main issues: suboptimal digital marketing strategies, the absence of a documented HACCP-based food safety system, and the lack of a systematically managed Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) system. These three aspects are considered crucial in determining business competitiveness, consumer trust, and long-term sustainability.

As a solution, the INTEGRA program introduces an integrated approach through three primary interventions. First, strengthening data-driven digital marketing strategies, including structured content development, SEO optimization, and the use of digital advertising to enhance visibility and market reach. Second, improving food safety awareness and practices through hygiene training, contamination prevention, and simulations of HACCP principle implementation. Third, implementing an OHS system through hazard identification, risk assessment, the use of personal protective equipment, and the establishment of a workplace safety culture within the production environment.

Through these interventions, the program aims to increase digital marketing performance by more than 30 percent, establish a documented food safety system, and implement a more structured OHS system. Overall, the program is expected to improve business capacity to become more professional, safe, and sustainable, while also serving as a replicable model for community engagement initiatives in other small-scale food enterprises.

The achievement was warmly welcomed by the Dean of FPH UI, Prof. Dr. Indri Hapsari Susilowati, S.K.M., M.K.K.K. “This grant reflects the strong commitment of FPH UI lecturers in delivering community engagement programs that are not only knowledge-based but also impactful and globally oriented. We hope this initiative can become a sustainable model of international collaboration and further strengthen FPH UI’s contribution to improving public health and community well-being,” she stated.

Going forward, the program is expected to reinforce FPH UI’s role in global community development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This accomplishment also reaffirms the faculty’s commitment to academic excellence and meaningful contributions in the fields of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and community empowerment.

As part of the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education’s WCU 2026 initiative, the program focuses on research-based empowerment and international collaboration to sustainably improve quality of life. (wrk)
