FPH UI OHS Students Win National OHS Poster Competition

Students from the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) at the Universitas Indonesia (UI) again made proud achievements at the national level competition. Two FPH UI students from the 2022 Bachelor of Occupational Safety and Health (OHS) study program, Axell Raditya Dhiyaurrahman and Duta Catur Agil Darsono, won 1st place in the 2024 OHS Fest poster competition organized by the National Occupational Safety and Health Student Forum (FMOHSN) on March 30, 2024. Axell and Duta brought a poster with the theme “Remember 3M for First Aid in Confined Spaces” which was then presented before a jury from the World Safety Organization Indonesia and the Labor Inspection Unit.

Confined space or limited space is an area with limited access that can cause security and health risks. Examples of confined spaces include silos, bunkers, tunnels, and other spaces that have dangers in the form of limited oxygen or dangerous chemicals. Confined space is one part that does not receive much attention in the world of OHS, but apparently, quite a lot of work accident cases occur in it. Through their posters, Axell and Duta campaign for first aid in confined spaces using the 3M method, namely Assessing the Situation, Securing the Scene, and Providing Help. Rescuers can assess the situation by recognizing and observing danger, then determining the type of help and predicting subsequent dangers. In the second step, namely securing the scene, rescuers can pay attention to the cause of the accident and then eliminate existing dangers and risk factors. Finally, rescuers can assess the victim’s condition, provide assistance according to the victim’s status, and refer the victim to a health facility if necessary. This poster made by FPH UI students also emphasizes that when a work accident occurs in a confined space, rescuers must prioritize their own safety first by using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) before providing aid to the victim.

The OHS Fest 2024 Poster Competition is not the first competition that Ambassadors and teams have participated in. According to Duta, he has participated in similar competitions several times, but not all competitions resulted in victory. “My goal in taking part in the competition is not necessarily to win, but I rather want to take advantage of my last opportunity at college. Most likely, when I enter the world of work, I will no longer be able to take part in competitions like this. “I enjoyed taking part in the competition process because I didn’t put pressure on myself and I really like design,” said Duta.

Duta also advised FPH UI students to take advantage of existing opportunities and facilities to continue to improve their competence through competitions, especially in competitions that are linear with majors. The hope is that FPH UI students can achieve more and make their beloved alma mater proud. Cheers to FPH UI students! (WR)
