The Faculty of Public Health (FPH) Universitas Indonesia (UI), on Wednesday-Thursday 31 January – 1 February 2024 held counseling guidance training for lecturers. The training was held to prepare for the active return of Guidance Counseling for students at FPH UI.
In connection with these preparations, counseling guidance training was held with the aim of improving the ability of academic supervisors to understand students’ character and detect the mental health problems they are experiencing; provide exposure and training regarding the basic knowledge, attitudes and skills needed in providing counseling for students; provide an understanding of stress management strategies as a basis for helping students deal with mental health problems.
The training was provided by Ika Malika, M.Psi., Psychologist from the UI Faculty of Psychology. Ika explained that Counselor Lecturers are expected to have a role in trying to be more sensitive to feelings/emotions that arise from students or emotional ventilation; help students to realize and accept the problems they face; and help students to find and achieve the best solution. When carrying out their role, counselor lecturers are also required to develop three qualities that are important to have. The three qualities are EAR (Emphaty, Authenticity, and Regard); has three skills, namely observation, listening, and problem solving; and have knowledge about students’ psychological development and developments related to the problems they face.
The training was opened by the FPH UI Student Affairs Manager, Dien Anshari, Ph.D., who appreciated the 13 training participants. The participants were lecturers who had previously taken basic counseling training for supervisors. “It is hoped that this two-day training will provide provisions for lecturers in dealing with various student mental health problems,” concluded Dien Anshari, Ph.D. (sf)
