Overview of the programme

The Junior Public Health Professional (JPP) Programme in WHO South-East Asia Region (WHO-SEAR) is operational since 2011. Its primary goal is to offer young public health professionals under 35 years of age from South-East Asia Region (SEAR) Member States a valuable opportunity for hands-on learning and leadership development.

The program aims to enhance technical and management skills in implementing targeted health programs and expose participants to methodologies and strategies used by WHO, inter-governmental organizations, and other international health development partners in providing essential support to nations.

To ensure equitable capacity building across SEAR Member States and attract young talent in key public health areas, opportunities are proposed to be provided through a JPP roster mechanism.

 

JPP opportunities are available in the following technical areas:

  • Digital health
  • Primary health Care
  • Maternal and reproductive Health
  • Child and Adolescent Health
  • Gender, Equity and Human Rights
  • Public Health Programme Planning and Monitoring

Terms of Reference

Under the overall guidance of the supervisor, the JPP will provide support in one of the six technical areas mentioned above through the following tasks:

  • Conduct systematic review of the latest scientific evidence.
  • Support in undertaking situational and landscape analysis.
  • Support to develop South- East Asia Regional strategies and action plans based on evidence, including support for monitoring and evaluation.
  • Support to strengthen Regional Health forums and platforms to advocate health agenda.
  • Support in capacity development initiatives for Member States and other stakeholders.
  • Support in advocacy, information dissemination and knowledge management including contributing to drafting technical briefs, talking points and remarks.
  • Collaborate with different units/departments in the regional office and country offices in planning and organizing periodic meetings, documenting key discussions and support in reporting.
  • Any other technical tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

 Job specific Terms of Reference will be developed in due course in consultation with respective supervisors.

 Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: Below 35 years of age
  • Be a National of South-East Asia Region Member States i.e., Bangladesh, Bhutan, DPR Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand or Timor-Leste?

Education:

 Essential:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the specific technical area relevant to the candidate’s application.
  •  Desirable:
  • Master’s degree in public health
  • Certified training in the specific technical area relevant to the candidate’s application.

Experience

Minimum:

  • Two years of work experience with at least one year in the specific technical area relevant to the candidate’s application at national, sub-national or regional level.

Desirable:

  • Evidence of publication in a scientific journal in the specific technical area relevant to the candidate’s application.
  • Knowledge of developing course / training materials in the specific technical area relevant to the candidate’s application.
  • Demonstrated experience of public health program implementation at field level.

 Skills required for the assignment:

 Minimum:

  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications.
  • Ability to coordinate, plan and implement projects.
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural team which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of different opinions and views.
