Being the Only One from Indonesia, Hana Fajrianti Becomes a Delegate in the Emerging Leaders Institute in Ireland

Hana Fajrianti, a student in the Master’s program in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) at the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) Universitas Indonesia (UI), has been selected as a delegate from Indonesia for the Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) in Dublin, Ireland, held from June 7-9, 2024.

The Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) is the world’s first Global Leadership Training for professionals in the field of Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences (OEHS). The event was organized by a team from the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) in collaboration with the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOSH). The activities provided learning and insights for delegates on how to enhance self-awareness, manage high-performing teams, and increase their influence within organizations and professions. Additionally, there were sessions led by notable speakers, including Nicole M.H. Greeson, M.S., CIH., President of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA); David Rodriguez, President of the Mexican Industrial Hygiene Association; and other renowned experts in the field of OEHS.

“Each participant was deeply taught to understand themselves, including their strengths and limitations, and how to understand the strengths and limitations of team members to achieve a common goal,” said Hana Fajrianti. “There were many group exercises that helped participants to understand deeply and philosophically that diversity in strengths and weaknesses is natural, which requires good self-control through self-awareness to work together in teams and lead more effectively,” she added.

Hana Fajrianti is a student in the 2022 cohort of the Master’s program in K3, who has made significant contributions in the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) sector within the construction industry, working on various civil construction projects, including building development, bridge construction, and oil and gas infrastructure for seven years. Her dedication in this field has earned her awards such as The Best HSE Woman Leader 2023 from HSE Magazine Indonesia. In addition to her professional achievements, Hana has a passion for writing and research, and is an active member of various HSE organizations in Indonesia. Her commitment to continuous learning and exploring new opportunities has made her a respected leader and an inspiring figure in the HSE community.

“The event was very interesting and unlike anything I’ve found in Indonesia. What sets it apart is the teaching method, which isn’t one-directional from instructor to participant; the instructors act more like moderators, encouraging participants to provide input, perspectives, opinions, and share their knowledge,” explained Hana Fajrianti.

“Self-awareness is the first thing that must be understood in leadership. We were trained to recognize ourselves, our character, strengths, and weaknesses, explored at a fundamental level. ELI has also become a new community of young people. We will have a continuous program, which is like creating a portal to share leadership information or experiences related to HSE across various industries worldwide,” Hana continued, sharing her impressions and the lessons she learned from the event.

The Head of the Master’s program in OSH, Dr. Dadan Erwandi, also expressed appreciation and recognition for Hana’s achievement. “It is a proud moment for us to know that one of our students has been selected as a delegate for an international event. It’s not easy for Hana to continue her studies while attending such an event. I hope this achievement will inspire and motivate her peers,” said Dr. Dadan.

The Emerging Leaders Institute was attended by 35 selected delegates from over 70 applicants from countries including Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, India, Peru, Colombia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, and Canada. Hana Fajrianti was the only delegate selected from Indonesia. (ITM)
