The Bachelor Occupational Health and Safety (BOHS) Degree Program at Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia (UI), represents the first BOHS degree program at a state university in Indonesia. The BOHS Degree Program was previously developed from Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) major under the faculty’s Bachelor of Public Health Degree Program. The demands of graduate users to create OHS graduates with specific competencies of OHS urged the Department of OHS to develop the present BOHS Degree Program.
The BOHS Degree Program curriculum is compiled with reference to various elements encompassing government policies, professional organizations (oil and gas, mining, construction, manufacturing, and other OHS-related sectors), relevant curriculum from reputable universities overseas when BOHS degree program was unavailable in Indonesia, the vision and mission of the university and faculty, as well as other stakeholders including students, lecturers, alumni, and users. Our curriculum is also designed based on national policies: the Regulation of Indonesian Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Number 3 of 2020 and the Regulation of Indonesian Minister of Manpower Number 5 of 2018, OHS-related professional organizations: Indonesian Industrial Hygiene Association (IIHA) and Indonesian Occupational Health Experts Association (Perhimpunan Ahli Kesehatan Kerja Indonesia/PAKKI), and by taking into account relevant international standards and practices from institutions, such as The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) dan National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The first batch of students accepted for the BOHS Degree Program was held in 2015.
