The Faculty of Public Health (FPH) at the Universitas Indonesia (UI) once again welcomed a visit from high school students. On Monday, October 28, 2024, FPH UI hosted 170 students from SMA Negeri 17 Palembang in Aula A at FPH UI.
The purpose of the visit was to provide prospective new students with the necessary information about FPH UI. The participants received direct information from the Education Manager and representatives from each undergraduate program. “FPH UI is the oldest public health faculty in Indonesia, currently offering 10 study programs: 4 undergraduate programs, 4 master’s programs, and 2 doctoral programs. In this session, we will focus on providing more information about our undergraduate programs to the visiting students as potential future undergraduates,” said Dr. Laila Fitria, S.K.M., M.K.M., Education Manager at FPH UI, as she opened the presentation. Dr. Laila also shared general information about FPH UI, including information about entrance selection paths, curriculum, tuition fees, capacity, teaching methods, and facilities.
Dr. Al Asyary, S.K.M., M.P.H., Secretary of the Environmental Health Study Program, provided information about the Undergraduate Program in Environmental Health. “In simple terms, environmental health is the science that studies how to identify and limit exposure from the environment that could harm health,” said Dr. Al. During the presentation, Dr. Al also shared much about fieldwork activities and the Merdeka Belajar (Independent Learning) program that Environmental Health students engage in.
Meanwhile, Dr. Dadan Erwandi, S.Psi., M.Si., Head of the Master’s Program in Occupational Health and Safety (K3), explained information about the K3 Undergraduate Program. In addition to sharing details about the K3 program, Dr. Dadan emphasized the importance of applying the knowledge learned and mastering soft skills. “In K3, as well as in all programs at FPH UI, students don’t just gain knowledge in the classroom, but also through practical experience and fieldwork. Students are also encouraged to participate in various student activities to enhance their soft skills,” said Dr. Dadan.
In the final presentation, Prof. Dr. Robiana Modjo, S.K.M., M.K.M., Head of the Undergraduate Program in Public Health, presented information about the Public Health Undergraduate Program. “Public health is different from other fields within the health sciences. Public health focuses on disease prevention, and the focus of intervention is on a community rather than individual patients. This is why students in public health are required to have strong communication skills, which are essential for delivering programs to the community in the future,” explained Prof. Bian.
The visiting students were very enthusiastic in responding to the presenters. Many questions were asked, not only about the study programs but also about the contributions students could make to the community once they become enrolled at the university. (wrk)
