Indoor Air Quality Management Course Visit to The Margo Hotel Depok

On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Bachelor’s Program at the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) of the Universitas Indonesia (UI) conducted an industrial visit to The Margo Hotel Depok. This visit was part of the course “Indoor Air Quality Management” and was attended by 10 students representing their group assignments. The students were accompanied by the course assistants and laboratory staff from the OHS Laboratory.

During the visit, the students were guided by Rully, Human Resource Development at The Margo Hotel, and Ariyanto, Chief Engineering at Margo City. The Margo Hotel is one of the facilities offered by Margo City, established by PT. Puri Dibya Property in 2006. The purpose of the visit was to gain knowledge about the topic “Mechanical Ventilation Air Conditioning (MVAC) System,” which includes the equipment, distribution network, and terminals used to provide cooling, heating, humidification, dehumidification, ventilation, or air purification in air-conditioned rooms.

Ariyanto explained the ventilation system operating at The Margo Hotel, starting from the cooling tower unit, chiller, air handling unit, fan coil unit, and maintenance, all of which were monitored through detailed videos, photos, and diagrams. He further elaborated, “The cooling tower and chiller at Margo Hotel and Margo Mall back each other up if one is under maintenance, ensuring that customer comfort is always maintained.”

In addition to learning about the MVAC system, the students also measured indoor air quality by assessing physical parameters, such as air movement, using a Velocity Meter and Anemometer, with guidance from the OHS Laboratory staff. These measurements were taken in the employee meeting room at The Margo Hotel as a sample.

This industrial visit provided valuable experience for the students of the OHS Bachelor’s Program at FPH UI, especially in understanding the Mechanical Ventilation Air Conditioning (MVAC) system implemented at The Margo Hotel. The knowledge gained from Ariyanto’s presentation about the efficient ventilation system and maintenance practices at the hotel enriched the students’ understanding of indoor air quality management. Additionally, the hands-on experience of measuring indoor air quality was an important practical exercise, enhancing their comprehension of the topic. It is hoped that similar activities will continue to be held to improve students’ competencies in the field of occupational health and safety. (Farah OHS)
