FPH UI and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Discuss Opportunities for Academic and Research Collaboration

The Faculty of Public Health (FPH) at Universitas Indonesia (UI) welcomed a delegation from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in a partnership exploration meeting held at Room PA212, RIK UI Building. This meeting, which took place on March 14, 2025, aimed to discuss various opportunities for academic and research collaboration between the two institutions.

During the meeting, the Dean of FPH UI, Prof. Mondastri Korib Sudaryo, M.S., D.Sc., emphasized the importance of collaboration in various aspects, including student and faculty exchanges, visiting professor programs, joint research and publications, and the organization of joint workshops. Prof. Mondastri also highlighted that LSHTM had already collaborated on research with FPH UI for four years through the Center for Health Economics and Policy Studies (PKEKK), indicating an opportunity to expand the ongoing partnership.

“This collaboration opportunity is crucial to follow up on, as it can enhance the quality of education and research, strengthen institutional partnerships, and advance the field of study. We also hope to invite academics from LSHTM to serve as adjunct professors during their collaboration with PKEKK. We see this as a promising opportunity for FPH UI and LSHTM,” said Prof. Mondastri.

Prof. Indri Hapsari Susilowati, S.K.M., M.K.K.K., Ph.D., Manager of Cooperation, Alumni Relations, and Ventures at FPH UI, added that various potential collaborations had been outlined in FPH UI’s profile, including both academic and non-academic opportunities. Prof. Indri emphasized that FPH UI’s proposed collaborations align well with the institution’s vision and mission.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ir. Asih Setiarini, M.Sc., Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs at FPH UI, stated that FPH UI had already established several international collaborations, such as the Public Health Study Tour (PHST) program with ACICIS and Australian universities. Through this program, students from partner universities learn about public health in Indonesia while also experiencing local culture.

“Perhaps a similar program could interest LSHTM students. We could also engage in joint learning about public health, nutrition, environmental health, and occupational health and safety (OHS), as covered in our study programs. Additionally, we could organize summer courses as part of our academic collaboration,” said Dr. Asih.

Prof. Richard G. White, Professor of Infectious Disease Modelling at the Centre for the Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases, the TB Centre, and the Vaccine Centre at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, welcomed the opportunity for collaboration. Prof. White explained that LSHTM is solely focused on public health and has three faculties, which are smaller in scale compared to UI. Therefore, LSHTM is always seeking opportunities to collaborate with other institutions in the same field.

“We have a very active teaching program, so collaboration in this area is highly interesting for further discussion. We are also looking for teaching partners,” said Prof. White.
Prof. White also mentioned that potential collaboration in research groups would be further explored to ensure the feasibility and benefits of this partnership for both institutions.

This meeting marked an initial step for FPH UI and LSHTM in establishing a closer partnership, particularly in academics and research. Both institutions hope that this discussion will lead to concrete agreements that will significantly benefit education and research in public health.

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is a world-renowned institution specializing in research and education in public health, epidemiology, and global health. LSHTM has three main faculties—Epidemiology and Population Health, Infectious Disease, and Public Health and Policy. The institution is known for its active teaching programs and extensive global research network. LSHTM is recognized for its contributions to addressing global health issues such as infectious diseases, nutrition, and health policy through collaborative research, professional training programs, and strategic partnerships with universities and global health organizations.
