Develops a Prevention Model for Coal Transportation Accidents, Adenan Officially Earns Doctorate from FPH UI

The Faculty of Public Health (FPH) Universitas Indonesia (UI) has once again conferred a doctoral degree in the field of Public Health Sciences. This time, Adenan successfully earned the highest academic title after defending his dissertation during the Doctoral Promotion Session held on Thursday, July 3, 2025.

His dissertation, titled “Development of an Accident Prevention Model for Coal Transportation in Open-Pit Mining Companies,” was motivated by the high risk of accidents during the coal hauling process. Work-related accidents and occupational diseases, often caused by negligence in occupational safety and health (OSH) practices, result in serious consequences—from injuries and disabilities to fatalities—impacting workers, their families, and employers alike. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), there are 430 million cases of work-related accidents and illnesses annually, with fatalities reaching 2.78 million workers per year globally.

In his research, Adenan explored the various factors contributing to coal transportation accidents and developed an integrated prevention model. This model combines the Human Factor Analysis and Classification System for the Mining Industry (HFACS-MI) with the investigative approach used by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), making it a novel contribution to the field.

Using a mixed-method approach—qualitative and quantitative—Adenan applied multiple linear regression analysis to examine the influence of six variables on workplace accidents: external factors, organizational influences, unsafe leadership, risk control, environmental conditions, and individual actions. The findings revealed that all variables had significant impacts, with unsafe leadership and environmental conditions emerging as the dominant factors behind workplace accidents.

This study underscores the importance of strengthening safety-oriented leadership, improving operator behavior, and enhancing the quality of hauling road infrastructure. Adenan’s proposed prevention model focuses on sustainable risk control and infrastructure maintenance to reduce workplace accidents in the mining sector.

“Congratulations to Dr. Adenan on this achievement. A doctoral degree is not just a testament to academic competence, but also reflects integrity, ethics, and a responsibility to apply knowledge for the betterment of society. Continue upholding the noble values of Universitas Indonesia as an alumnus,” said Prof. Dr. dr. Zulkifli Djunaidi, M.App.Sc., as the dissertation supervisor.

The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. dr. L. Meily Kurniawidjaja, M.Sc., Sp.Ok., with Prof. Dr. dr. Zulkifli Djunaidi, M.App.Sc. as the main advisor, and co-advisors Prof. dra. Fatma Lestari, M.Si., Ph.D., and Prof. Dr. Drs. Sutanto Priyo Hastono, M.Kes. The examination committee included Dr. Budi Hartono, S.Si., M.K.M.; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Herlina J. EL-Matury, S.T., M.Kes.; Dr. Ir. H. Kusnendi Soehardjo, M.T.; and Dr. Suparni, S.T., M.K.K.K.

Adenan graduated with distinction and is recorded as the 20th doctoral graduate of the Public Health Sciences Doctoral Program in 2025, the 359th graduate of the doctoral program in Public Health Sciences, and the 472nd doctoral graduate from FPH UI overall. (ITM)
