Introduction

Doctor of Epidemiology Degree Program represents one of doctoral programs at the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia (FPH UI), receiving an operational permission under the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 428/DIKTI/kep/1998. The degree program has two specializations: Clinical Epidemiology and Community-based Epidemiology.

Vision

To support the achievement of FPH UI’s vision by being a doctoral educational institution in the field of Epidemiology that plays an active role in developing quality human resources in Indonesia and at the international level.

Mission

  • Organizing a quality Doctor of Epidemiology Degree Program at UI on an ongoing basis according to international standards, concerning the personality and characters of the university and faculty, as well as the health needs and problems in Indonesia
  • Conducting excellent, creative, innovative, and effective Epidemiological research in a sustainable manner at international standards
  • Conducting community engagement by applying Epidemiological science and methods to improve the public health level
  • Improving the quality of the degree program in a sustainable manner.

  • The FPH UI Doctor of Epidemiology Degree Program is the only doctoral program in Epidemiology in Indonesia and has been ‘Excellent’ accredited for the period of 2022-2027 academic year.

Profile

The graduates (Doctors of Epidemiology) are those able to develop the science and methods of Epidemiology to address any health issues related to the Epidemiology discipline through an appropriate, evidence-based model with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches for the developments of research, community engagement, and recommendations by advocating to the relevant policy or decision makers that apply nationally and internationally.

Learning Outcomes

Based on the analysis of needs, policies, benchmarks, professional organizations, and Public Health college organizations, the learning outcomes for the Doctors of Epidemiology are formulated as follows:

  • Being able to develop recommendations (C6) and conduct advocacy (C6) to policy or decision makers based on the results of in-depth studies of Epidemiological evidence and applicable national and international regulations/provisions (Expected Learning Outcome/ELO 7)
  • Being able to contribute to the development (C6) of health sciences, both the clinical and community-based, through national and international Epidemiological approaches. (ELO 6)
  • Being able to contribute to the development (C6) of Epidemiology in efforts to improve the level of public health (ELO 5)
  • Being able to produce, present, and publish scientific works on Epidemiological research in national and international forums (C6 / ELO 4)
  • Being able to manage (C6) teaching, research, and community engagement in the field of Epidemiology which is beneficial for the welfare of humanity and the development of science, the results of which receive national and international recognition (ELO 3)
  • Being able to develop (C6) ways of solving public health problems, particularly those related to the discipline of Epidemiology, through concepts, theories, methods, or appropriate models based on international-level evidence with interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches (ELO 2), as well as manage and secure research information (CP6)
  • Being able to develop (C6) the science and methods of descriptive and analytical Epidemiology so that creative, original and tested work is produced to improve the quality of efficient and effective healthcare services, and in accordance with the needs and standards demanded by internal and external stakeholders, including the demands of the national and international job market. (ELO 1)

Curriculum Structure

The degree program curriculum structure is set referring to competencies under competency levels as recommended by the Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology at level 9 (for certain competencies with a small proportion, at level 8 or 7). With these set competencies, the objectives of doctoral education in Epidemiology will be achieved according to the learning outcomes based on available specializations in the degree program (Community-based and Clinical Epidemiology specializations).

Course Structure and Study Period

The course structure above is designed for completion in 5-6 terms under normal conditions. The normal study period is eight terms without leave; therefore, if a GPA is greater than 3.71, students can graduate with cum laude honors. Those with a GPA approaching 4 can graduate summa cum laude if they complete the program in 6 semesters or less.

Prospective Student Criteria and Admission Pathway

The Doctor of Epidemiology Degree Program students are those with educational background in health sciences (Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Nursing, and other relevant disciplines), and completed their respective Master’s degree in health.

Acceptance and Graduation Rates

The acceptance rate highly depends on the number of applicants through admission pathway for the Doctor of Epidemiology Degree Program: the UI admission selection test comprising Academic Potential Test and English proficiency with a passing grade determined by the university and by the faculty and degree program managers.

If the applicants reach the passing grade, they will be admitted to the Doctoral Program in Epidemiology at the FPH UI. The program had a competitive acceptance rate of 1.3-2% over the past five years, with a 100% graduation rate.

Learning Opportunities

During the study period, the students follow the set curriculum and any academic activities, including two independent learnings expected to accomplish the knowledge in constructing their doctoral dissertation. They are also expected to attend international scholarly conferences held in global cities for at least once and publish scientific articles in indexed journals, thereby having adequate international-level experiences.

Student Activities

Students will follow the university and faculty-level Student Orientation Week at campus other than academic activities. They also can use all sports facilities at campus (golf, tennis, football, badminton, and other sports), as well as attend traditional and modern arts activities available at the faculty and university areas.

Graduate’s Waiting Period and Employment Areas

Most of the degree program students are already employed at international agencies such as WHO and international NGOs, the Ministry of Health, Health Offices, and national NGOs. For unemployed ones, they usually get a job in various institutions as mentioned above in 1-2 years after graduation.
