Introduction

The increasing complexity of the healthcare system requires healthcare facility leaders with managerial competencies. Law No. 17 of 2023 concerning Health stipulates that every healthcare facility leader must possess health management competencies as part of efforts to achieve good governance. These competencies are key to carrying out strategic responsibilities and functions amid demands for efficiency, service quality, and global dynamics.

To address this challenge, the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia (FPH UI) provides a Master of Hospital Administration Degree Program, which is a pioneer in hospital administration education in Indonesia. The degree program that was established since September 25, 1993, and authorized under the Decree of Director General of Higher Education, the Indonesian Ministry of National Education No. 152/DIKTI/Kep/2007 has demonstrated its commitment to preparing excellent human resources in the hospital management field. Graduates of this program are spread across all provinces in Indonesia and have made significant contributions to strengthening the national healthcare system through adaptive, professional, and evidence-based leadership.

Excellence

The Hospital Administration Studies Program at the FPH UI represents a pioneer in hospital administration education in Indonesia. With an adaptive Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum, internationally-recognized teaching staff, and modern learning facilities, the program is committed to creating graduates capable of meeting global challenges and contributing significantly to health system management.

The program is supported by expert lecturers with their extensive experience and contribution in the field of hospital administration, including serving as advisors to several national hospitals such as RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo, RSUP Fatmawati, public hospitals in Jakarta, RSUP Pusat Otak Nasional, and numerous private hospitals, the Expert Council of the Indonesian Regional Hospital Association (Dewan Pakar Asosiasi Rumah Sakit Daerah Seluruh Indonesia/ARSADA), the Management of the Indonesian Hospital Association (Pengurus Perhimpunan Rumah Sakit Seluruh Indonesia/PERSI), and expert staff at the Indonesian Ministry of Health. In fact, several professors from this studies program are engaged in the national and international committees according to their scientific field.

The program curriculum is designed based on the latest development in hospital administration and the UI’s vision and mission. This program has achieved an ‘Excellent’ accreditation from the Indonesian Accreditation Agency for Higher Education in Health (Lembaga Akreditasi Mandiri Pendidikan Tinggi Kesehatan/LAMPT-Kes) and international accreditation from the AHPGS (Accreditation Agency in Health and Social Sciences).

Learning in the FPH UI Hospital Administration Studies Program integrates theory and practice through various activities such as:

  • Field visits to major hospitals to comprehend real challenges.
  • Collaboration with experienced health practitioners as guest lecturers
  • IT-based learning systems such as e-learning management system (EMAS), Sistem Informasi Akademik Next Generation (SIAK-NG), and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
  • The program also offers distance learning classes that reach regions such as Bali, Lombok, Palembang, and other regions.
  • Equivalency through Recognition of Prior Learning: recognition of Learning Outcomes (CP) obtained from formal, non-formal, informal education and/or work experience as a basis for continuing formal education and carrying out equivalency with certain qualifications
  • Credit earning

 

The program graduates have proven their capacity by occupying important positions such as:

  • Hospital leaders in all provinces of Indonesia, including directors of major hospitals
  • National policy makers in the field of hospital administration
  • The program alumni, who are spread across various institutions, also create a strong network through the FPH UI Alumni Association of Masters of Hospital Administration (Alumni Magister Administrasi Rumah Sakit Fakultas Kesehatan Masyarakat Universitas Indonesia/IKAMARS FKM UI).

The program provides complete learning facilities, such as:

  • A library with extensive collections and access to international journal databases such as ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and PubMed, which supports research-based learning processes
  • Extensive collaborative networks with national and international institutions, including foreign universities, PERSI, ARSADA, Asosiasi Rumah Sakit Swasta Indonesia (ARSSI), Ikatan Ahli Manajemen dan Administrasi Rumah Sakit Indonesia (IAMARSI), Perkumpulan Institusi Pendidikan Magister Perumahsakitan Indonesia (PIPMARSI), and various national hospitals, and so on.
  • Publication of the ARSI journal as a forum for scientific publications.

Graduate Degree and Profile

Graduates will have a MARS (Master Administrasi Rumah Sakit/Master of Hospital Administration) academic degree. The FPH UI Master of Hospital Administration Degree Program equips graduates to develop adaptive, innovative, and evidence-based problem-solving and anticipatory efforts in hospital management.

Prospective Student Criteria and Admission Pathway

Requirements

  1. Having a Bachelor’s degree from a study program accredited at least B by BAN-PT/LAM-PTKes, with a minimum GPA of 3.00 (scale 4.00)
  2. Passing the university admission selection test called SIMAK UI (Academic Potential Test and English proficiency) and interview
  3. Applicants having at least two years of work experience in a hospital, or being hospital owners or teaching staff in the hospital sector, or working in a hospital consulting company are preferred.

Admission Pathway

The admission pathway for the FPH UI Master of Hospital Administration Degree Program is through the SIMAK UI. Registration is made online through the official UI website at  penerimaan.ui.ac.id.

  5. Portfolio (for prospective applicants with no work experience)
  6. Prospective applicants, who are specifically graduates from foreign higher education institutions, must upload a certificate of diploma equivalency from the Directorate General of Higher Education.

Acceptance and Graduation Rates

The competitive level of new student admission for the FPH UI Master of Hospital Administration Degree Program based on data from the last five years was 60.5% with a student graduation rate of 100%.

Learning Opportunities

The degree program is designed to provide holistic learning opportunities, combining theoretical and practical approaches through a variety of learning methods. Students will attend in-depth face-to-face lectures, complemented by case studies, exercises, and group discussions which stimulate their critical thinking and teamwork. Furthermore, students are given opportunities to develop through seminars, public lectures, and sharing sessions with alumni, broadening their horizons from a real-world perspective. Learning activities are not limited to the classroom, but also complemented by field trips, residency activities, and research that provide hands-on experience in real-world contexts.

Student Activities

The degree program students have many opportunities to develop themselves not only academically but also through various non-academic activities. One such opportunity is joining the Postgraduate Student Association (Himpunan Mahasiswa Pascasarjana/HMP) of the FPH UI, which serves as a forum for collaboration and development for students across Master’s degree programs at the faculty.

Graduate’s Waiting Period and Employment Areas

Based on a Tracer Study from 2021 to 2023, the program graduates successfully secured employment within less than three months after graduation. This demonstrates their high job readiness and ability to compete well in the professional world.
