Introduction

Master of Public Health Degree Program at the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia (FPH UI) is the first/oldest in Indonesia for the implementation of Public Health Sciences. During the early period of FPH UI’s establishment (1965 – 1989), the student admission process was limited to bachelor’s or medical graduates and paramedics (health academy graduates). Then, starting from the 1990s to date, following the development of Public Health Sciences in the world (research without boundaries), the FPH UI Master of Public Health Degree Program adheres to the concept of multidisciplinary resources, thus opening up opportunities as widely as possible to all levels of society to become prospective students of the degree program.

The primary requirements for prospective students of the degree program include attaining a Bachelor’s degree from a study program accredited by National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (Badan Akreditasi Nasional-Perguruan Tinggi/BAN-PT) or a Diploma IV in Health graduate, making an online register, and passing the admission selection test.

Referring to the UI Rector Regulation No. 2 of 2024, the study period for the FPH UI Master of Public Health Degree Program can be completed in 4-8 terms (academic leave is counted as a term load) with a minimum number of credits that must be fulfilled and passed is 54 credits including producing 1 published article and compiling a final assignment.

Objectives

The Master of Public Health Degree Program aims to create quality graduates the nation can be proud of and contribute significantly to the development of public health in Indonesia, upholding Indonesian culture, unity, and integrity regardless of ethnicity and religion. This program is expected to create leaders who are able to provide recommendations in the form of interventions for health problems based on evidence, respect local culture, and are open to diversity of thought.

Excellence

  • Being a benchmark for the development of the Master’s degree in Public Health education in Indonesia since its establishment in 1990 until present, and achieving Excellent Accreditation not only from the National Assessor (LAM-PTKes) but also from the AHPGS International Assessor team
  • Having 47 home-based lecturers with lecturer certificates and doctoral degrees and 12 of them are permanent professors of the FPH UI
  • Organizing 15 specializations/interests that are not available in other Master of Public Health degree programs, which is supported by five departments (Health Policy and Administration, Biostatistics and Population Studies, Public Health Nutrition, Environmental Health, Health Education and Behavioral Sciences) and two study groups (Reproductive Health and Quality of Health Services).
  • Each student of the FPH UI Master of Public Health Degree Program has a great opportunity to participate in collaborative research under the permanent lecturers in submitting internal and external grants to UI, so that it will ease students to complete their final projects, both journal publication and Master’s thesis.
  • The curriculum developed follows the global developments in Public Health Science, and the implementation of lectures has implemented a face-to-face (offline) system and e-learning-based distance learning.
  • Having complete academic and non-academic support facilities that always follow scientific developments, including a special discussion room for postgraduate students with strong hotspot network support
  • The FPH UI campus is easily accessible by public transportation, including cars and the commuterline, around the Greater Jakarta area, via the Universitas Indonesia and Pondok Cina Train Stations. The FPH UI campus is also connected to the UI Hospital, which serves as a location for field practicums and community engagement activities for teaching staff.

Graduate Degree and Profile

Graduates of the FPH UI Master of Public Health Degree Program will have an M.K.M (Magister Kesehatan Masyarakat/Master of Public Health) academic degree.

Graduate Profile: The degree program generally creates Masters who are able to develop evidence-based intervention programs for any health problems.

Learning Outcomes

  • Being able to develop second-level public health services by conducting a health status monitoring, diagnosis, investigation, and research into public health problems and disorders in the work area
  • Being able to assess the implementation of second-level public health service policies
  • Being able to develop managerial policies and program planning to support second-level public health services
  • Being able to develop community empowerment methods to address public health problems at the second level
  • Being able to assess the effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of second-level public health services
  • Being able to communicate the results of their work to the community and stakeholders in second-level public health services
  • Being able to apply Public Health Sciences including Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental and Social Sciences and Health Behaviors, Occupational Health and Safety, Health Policy and Administration, and able to play a role as a researcher, academic, and manager of second-level public health services
  • Being able to lead planning, organizing, implementing, supervising, controlling and evaluating program activities
  • Being able to manage applied and evaluative research activities for the first and second-level public health service efforts
  • Being able to provide alternative health interventions by respecting local culture, being communicative, participatory and open to diversity of thought in leading work groups

Admission Pathway

The admission to the degree program is through the university admission selection test called SIMAK UI in two batches of admission. The admission pathway and requirements can be found at penerimaan.ui.ac.id.

Acceptance and Graduation Rates

The FPH UI Master of Public Health Degree Program has a competitive level of <1% (in the last three years) with a student graduation rate of 100%.

Learning Opportunities

Since 2017, the FPH UI Master of Public Health Degree Program has consistently encouraged its students to take advantage of study abroad opportunities offered through the UI International Office and directly by each educational institution. Many students have taken advantage of these opportunities by participating in summer or short courses at foreign higher education institutions.

From 2023 to the present, the degree program has accepted international students through the UI Great Scholarship Program and the KNB Scholarship (a financial assistance offered by the Indonesian Government to prospective international students coming from developing countries) from several African countries, Pakistan, and Timor Leste.

Student Activities

Apart from academic activities, the FPH UI Master of Public Health Degree Program also provides wide opportunities for students to participate in non-academic activities. The degree program has a Postgraduate Student Association at the FPH UI called HMP S2 IKM FKM UI, allowing students to organize and participate in various non-academic activities. Major annual events include the International Public Health Seminar (IMOP PH) in collaboration with the faculty.

In addition to regular international seminars, the HMP S2 IKM FKM UI also facilitates national/international-level seminars held at the department level, including regular community engagement activities in various regions in collaboration with alumni.

The degree program students can also participate in other activities held at the faculty, university, national, and international levels. Announcements regarding various activities can be found on social media and the relevant website.

Graduates’ Waiting Period and Employment Areas

A 2024 alumni survey showed that the waiting period for graduates to find their first job was within one and three months.
