The Faculty of Public Health (FPH) at the Universitas Indonesia (UI), as the oldest public health faculty in Indonesia, remains committed to continuously introducing public health knowledge to the wider community. One of the ways to achieve this is through socializing public health knowledge during study visits from junior high school students. On Thursday, October 24, 2024, FPH UI provided information about the public health studies offered at the faculty to students from SMA Negeri 87 Jakarta and SMA Insan Kamil Bogor.
The event, held at the Doctoral Promotion Room of FPH UI, was opened by the Education Manager of FPH UI, Dr. Laila Fitria, S.K.M., M.K.M. In her welcoming speech and presentation of the general profile of FPH UI, Dr. Laila provided information about the undergraduate programs available at FPH UI, including the curriculum, teaching methods, tuition fees, admission selection routes, admission competitiveness, scholarships, facilities, fieldwork activities, and a brief overview of the Bachelor’s Program in Public Health. Meanwhile, information about the other undergraduate programs was presented directly by the heads or secretaries of the respective study programs.
The Head of the Bachelor’s Program in Nutrition at FPH UI, Dr. Ir. Diah M. Utari, M.Kes., introduced the Nutrition Study Program. During her presentation, Dr. Diah emphasized the importance of studying in the Nutrition Study Program. She also discussed issues related to nutrition, such as diet. “Be careful when choosing and following current trends, especially those related to dieting, as they can impact the intake of nutrients into the body. Adolescents need to pay attention to growth to avoid nutritional deficiencies, especially adolescent girls, as they will become mothers and give birth to the next generation. Proper and good nutrition can help avoid intergenerational nutritional problems,” Dr. Diah explained.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Bachelor’s Program in Environmental Health, Dr. Al Asyary, S.K.M., M.P.H., presented the Environmental Health Study Program. “Environmental health is the science and practice of preventing human injury and illness by promoting well-being through identifying, evaluating, and minimizing exposure to harmful environmental factors,” Dr. Al explained. He also highlighted the difference between public health and other health sciences in terms of scope and action. “Public health focuses on communities, whereas other health sciences focus on individuals. Public health is a preventive science, while other fields focus on curative actions,” Dr. Al added.
During the presentation of the Bachelor’s Program in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), Abdul Kadir, S.K.M., M.Sc., the Head of the OHS Program, explained that OHS focuses on workers. “Studying OHS means learning how to promote OHS to ensure that workers remain healthy and safe. This is important because workplace accidents are very common. The role of OHS here is to prevent such incidents,” explained Abdul Kadir. He also mentioned that the pillars of OHS knowledge studied at FPH UI include occupational health, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, human factors, and behavior.
The students and accompanying teachers from both schools appeared enthusiastic about the presentations from the speakers. They asked various questions related to the subjects studied in the programs, career prospects, scholarship information, and the admission process for new students. (wrk)
