Saturday, 11 February 2023, the Faculty of Public Health (FPH), Universitas Indonesia (UI) held an offline scientific paper writing training. The activity which is a series of the 4th Young Scholar Symposium on Public Health (YSSOPH) includes seminars and one-on-one manuscript reviews. Filled with 6 (six) speakers and 14 (fourteen) trainers, this training is open to all people and can be attended free of charge using the online method.
There are 6 (six) materials in the seminar session. The first material entitled “Foundation of Academic Writing” was delivered by the Professor of the Department of Biostatistics FPH UI, Prof. dr. Budi Utomo, M.P.H., Ph.D. In his presentation, Prof. Budi conveyed the basic research material, how to develop ideas, create research questions, and how to assess the feasibility of a research. The second material regarding how to prepare a manuscript to become an abstract was delivered by the Professor of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) FPH UI, Prof. dr. Fatma Lestari, M.Si., Ph.D. Prof. Fatma continued Prof.’s presentation. Budi by conveying the process of scientific writing, how to start writing, determining what you want to write about, and how to write an abstract and introduction. The presentation of the material was continued by the Professor of the Department of Environmental Health, FPH UI, Prof. Dr. Budi Haryanto, M.Sc. After knowing how to start writing, material from Prof. Budi complemented the participants’ scientific treasures with knowledge on how to send manuscripts to publishers and respond to revisions provided. Presentation from Prof. Budi closed the morning session in this training.
Furthermore, FPH UI AKK Department Lecturer, Helen Andriani, S.Si, Apt., M.Sc., Ph.D., explained how writers can assess the feasibility of their own writing before submitting it to publishers. This is useful in rewriting a work to make it more perfect without too many revisions. Furthermore, Head of the Center for Clinical Nutrition Research, IMERI Faculty of Medicine UI, Dr. Rina Agustina, M.Sc., Ph.D, explained material on how to publish papers in highly reputable journals. This seminar was also filled with material from Dr. Eduard Jan Beck, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, with material entitled “Writing a High-Quality Research Paper”. This seminar session is expected to enrich the knowledge of the participants on how to write scientific papers, starting from searching for ideas, to publication in well-known journals.
After the seminar ended, the participants were then directed to the breakout room to get a personal review of the manuscripts they had written. Rita Damayanti, MSPH.; Indri Hapsari Susilowati, S.K.M., M.K.K.K., Ph.D; Helen Andriani, S.Si., Apt., M.Sc., Ph.D.; Dien Anshari, S.Sos., M.Sc., Ph.D .; Trisari Anggondowati, S.K.M., M.Epid., Ph.D.; Renti Mahkota, S.K.M., M.Epid .; Abdul Kadir, S.K.M., M.Sc.; Yolanda Handayani, S.K.M., M.K.M.; and Nurfi Afriansyah, S.K.M., M.ScPH. In the future, it is hoped that the manuscripts written by each participant can be refined and published in well-known journals that have been indexed by SINTA, Scopus, and others. (BK)
