Tuesday, August 29, 2023, the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) Universitas Indonesia (UI) in collaboration with the FPH UI Epidemiology Student Association, Episentrum, held a talk show “Increasing Individual Awareness and Vigilance regarding the Incident of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in the Adolescent and Young Adult Population”. Held in Hall A of FPH UI, this event was attended by students, educational staff, and retired staff of FPH UI.
Discussing diabetes, this talk show aims to be an initial forum for increasing public awareness and knowledge regarding type 2 diabetes mellitus, so that it can create community initiatives for early detection.
Diabetes is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism associated with insulin deficiency and/or resistance. There are several types of diabetes mellitus, namely type 1 DM, type 2 DM, and other types of DM. “Type 2 diabetes mellitus is strongly influenced by lifestyle. Because in this type of diabetes the body cannot use insulin effectively. “This disease is a common condition that causes blood sugar (glucose) levels to become too high,” explained Dr. Nafrialdi, Ph.D., Sp.PD., Internal Medicine Specialist at RSU Bunda Margonda in his presentation of the material.
The insulin resistance that underlies type 2 diabetes mellitus usually occurs due to a lack of attention to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Further discussing lifestyle and balanced nutritional intake, Wahyu Kurnia Yusrin Putra, S.K.M., M.K.M., FPH UI Nutrition Lecturer, presented material entitled “Prevent Diabetes with a Balanced Diet”. Many health problems, one of which is diabetes, are caused by an imbalance in intake which is exacerbated by a lack of exercise. “There are 3 (three) keys to a healthy life for a long life, namely diet, physical activity and a good mindset,” said Wahyu. Maintaining a balanced nutritional intake can be done by getting used to eating a variety of foods, maintaining a clean lifestyle, active lifestyle and exercise, and monitoring body weight.
In addition to the talk show, this event was followed by the routine agenda of the GRISETA integrated development post (Posbindu) which provided free health checks including measurements of weight and height, waist circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels on time, as well as doctor consultations. This time, Posbindu is being held again in collaboration with RSU. Bunda Margonda.
Carrying out health talk shows accompanied by regular posbindu is one of the efforts made by FPH UI to monitor and maintain the health of students and staff within the FPH UI environment. (wrk)
