Overview

History

The Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia (FPH UI) was initiated by Dr. Mochtar, Head of the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia. In collaboration with USAID, the faculty initially offered a Bachelor’s degree program (SKM) equivalent to a Master of Public Health.

Pursuant to the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Sciences No. 26 of 1965, dated February 26, 1965, the Faculty of Public Health was officially established under the auspices of Universitas Indonesia. Subsequently, Ministerial Decree No. 153 of 1965 established the official founding date of FKM UI as July 1, 1965.

In 1987, the Bachelor of Public Health program was launched to fulfill faculty status requirements in accordance with national education laws. Starting in 1990, FPH UI introduced a master’s degree program in Public Health Sciences, followed by additional master’s programs in Hospital Administration Studies, Epidemiology, and Occupational Health and Safety. In 1994, FPH UI expanded its offerings by opening a 3-year Diploma III vocational program in various health disciplines. However, to align with the university’s strategic vision of prioritizing research and attaining world-class university status, the diploma program was phased out in 2004. Today, university-level diploma programs are managed by the Vocational Program of Universitas Indonesia.

By 2013, FPH UI had developed into a comprehensive public health education provider offering undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees. It housed 12 research centers, 7 departments, 10 study programs across all academic levels, and 2 centers of excellence.

As the oldest public health faculty in the nation, FPH UI continuously adapts to evolving demands and global changes through ongoing self-evaluation and institutional improvement, ensuring its position at the forefront of public health education.
